The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) dispersed 34,210 tilapia fingerlings to registered fisherfolks of San Juan, Manabo, Bucay, and Lagayan on January 16, 2019, to restore fish population in Abra rivers and lakes under the Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa (BASIL) program.

Provincial Fisheries Aqua technician Daphne G. Barbero said the recipients also received 60 sacks of feeds and 60 fish cages to improve their fish production boosting their livelihood and food sufficiency.

Gourami and eel fingerlings were also released in open waters of the said municipalities. Barbero said BFAR is working to revive the aquaculture industry by propagating freshwater fish through BASIL program.
