On the first day of the 2018 Abra Provincial Athletic Association Meet, two Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) long jump players faced off for the gold to have a chance to represent the province in the next CARAA Meet. Sunshine Awingan from Unit 12 and Angelique Bacarisa from Unit 1 were both players of the long jump during the 2018 CARAA Meet. Bacarisa marked a distance of 5.13m and won the gold. On the other hand, Awingan, who marked 5.10m and took home the silver medal. In this Provincial Meet, Awingan marked 4.87m while Bacarisa marked 4.33m. Awingan bagged the gold, Ronalyn Macabeo on silver while Bacarisa landed on bronze.
Awingan, a 17-year-old native of Boliney is the sixth among nine siblings. She started playing softball in elementary where she realized being an athlete can help her get a scholarship when she enters college.
Currently, she is a senior high school student under the General Academic Strand. She hopes to continue her studies and become a criminologist someday.
Because of her potential, the Far Eastern University is eyeing her for an athletic scholarship.
Awingan also mentioned that her CARAA 2018 incentive from PGA through Gov. Joy Bernos was used to purchase food for their family.
She also encouraged athletes like her not to stop developing themselves. “I can do all things through CHRIST,” she added.
