Experts from University of the Philippines National Institute of Geological Sciences, National Taiwan University, and Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology have intensified paleoseismic research in Northern Luzon under the SHAPES project, part of the broader PHASS program.
Led by Dr. Noelynna Ramos and Prof. J. Bruce Shyu, the initiative examines active fault systems to uncover traces of past earthquakes. By reading the earthโs hidden records, the team aims to strengthen seismic hazard assessments and enhance disaster preparedness across vulnerable communities.
Following earlier fieldwork in 2025 and early 2026, the team continued their investigations on April 1, 2026, in Barangay Basbasa, Tayum, Abra; bringing science closer to safer futures.
